Many older people prefer to live in their own home but many face “senior challenges” or threats to their independence due to illness, disability, lack of family and community supports or an inability to access public services that meet their needs.
The people of South Australia are ageing and more and more, people are living longer and better lives. It is interesting to note that in 1950, just 42 letters were sent by the Queen to congratulate Australian seniors on reaching 100 years of age. In 2016, that number had risen to 2,643. And by 2024, this number is projected to be 4,885. The Queen is going to need a potato stamp for her signature!
A minority of seniors, probably one in five aged 65+, will require some form of support.
In circumstances where people have to depend on others there is a need to ensure that these senior challenges and the dignity of our seniors can be heard and facilitated, independently of family, service providers or systems interests.
